Gambling, dancing and rock climbing in Vegas

Most people think of Las Vegas as the land of overindulgence. And they’re absolutely right. Luckily I was only there for two nights this past March. A third night might have killed me. After the night clubs, casinos and shows (note: we went to see Zumanity by Cirque du Soleil. Envision naked people in silly costumes performing extreme gymnastics… it was awesome), I was more than ready to get outside of the city to appreciate the area’s true splendor.

The Red Rocks National Conservation Area is right outside of Las Vegas, and its unique brand of beauty is breathtaking. It also offers some world-class climbing routes. I was pretty useless the day that my buddy Tarzan got to Red Rocks to climb with me (still recovering from Vegas), but we made a visit to the Panty Wall nonetheless.

Panties don't stand a chance when Tarzan's around

There were some great climbs, and we both got in some quality 5.8-ish lead practice.

After a couple days of climbing, we decided to really challenge ourselves and spend the day climbing Solar Slab. With over 1,500 feet of climbing, it’s one of the best moderate multi-pitch routes in the country. To quote Tarzan, “I’m ready to get scared.”

It's hard to judge perspective, but trust me, this thing is huge.

Neither Tarzan nor I had been on anything this big before, but we were ready for the adventure, and the reward – Dogfish Head’s 90 Minute IPA. The day was gorgeous, sunny and fun. I’ll let the pictures from our climb do most of the talking:

I admire the dedication, Tarzan

Needless to say, the 90 Minute IPA was incredible. Probably one of the best IPAs I’ve ever had, especially after a 1,500 foot climb.

  1. The Dogfish Head 90 Minute is a personal fave. The brewpub in DE is totally worth a visit if you’re ever in the area – excellent seafood and a great sampler of 5 or 6 different brews. Climb looks like it was sick too!

  2. Dogfish Head is pretty much the only reason I would ever go to Delaware. By the way, my offer stands. Send me some pictures of you doing something epic that includes beer, and I’ll get you up on the site.
